Facebook and the travel industry

Social Networks

Facebook

I wrote frequently about Facebook and its applications in the travel industry.
Today, I want like my international colleagues in the last days do not follow particular application, but the effect of Facebook in the industry
general.
The emphasis is of course the applications, followed by groups and pages. These are the tools which we can mainly work with.

Applications:

Facebook Applikationen Reisen

The German overview shows as “travel” 557 different applications
.
Leaders are:

  • Cities I´ve visited - 57.906 active users daily
  • Where I´ve been - 54.889 active users daily
  • Traveller IQ Challenge - 23.764 active users daily
  • What City should You Live In - active users daily

2 tools category “Look where I was already where” and 2
games / Quiz. The first planning tool “Trips” follows with 1,566 users (but still on the first page) far behind. Lonely Planet entire trip was 14
user enthusiasm.

All figures are 1% or less (usually rounded 0%) daily Facebook users. Travel in the Facebook community does not matter at least not in the use of Facebook. Obviously, there are no applications, which only rudimentary something useful for the travel industry. But in other industries it is no better. Nobody had a heady idea developed to benefit from a “Poke him” community. Even such brands like Coke and Adidas crawling around with their App’s at 12 users and less.

Facebook Groups

Facebook Diskussionsboard Gruppe

Actually groups are indeed a good thing, because there are people with the same interests to meet and exchange. As XING-user, I know how groups can work. Condition for this is the users are informed about the ongoing discussions. At this point Facebook lagging behind (or I have the right button not found). There is no way to follow the ongoing discussions (e-mail alerts, RSS or so). It has forced me back for retrieval and news itself. At the current volume of information impossible. Accordingly empty are the discussion forums. Here lost Facebook possibilities to free itself, which is incomprehensible to me, and the groups are not a tool for marketing, PR or even exchange. The same goes for the wall.

Pages

Facebook offers the possibility to create a separate page. For these you can win fans (equivalent to friends in profile) and show various information. The structure is like the profile. The approach is good. See page of tourismuszukunft.de (pages are only for Facebook users). But the same problem as in the groups - no RSS, no newsletter and thus an impasse.

In summary I would see Facebook as a good social network - really
Social - no business. In order to reach groups, which grow up behind the Poke me age, Facebook must have for their tools, that they already have today (groups, pages), at least the usual standard (because they are there just Web 0.9 - 1.0 already knew that there are newsletter). About the heady idea of a business case will now crushed probably hundreds of specialists their head . And as soon a possible, otherwise another network will runs on Facebook’s place. We had enough bubbles in the IT.
